Description
Developed by and for nature photographers : the Buteo Photo Gear Floating Hide Grebe II was born from practical experience. After extensive testing of the first version, all the insights, feedback, and wishes of photographers and ambassadors were incorporated into this updated design. The result: a floating hide that works even more efficiently and is even more comfortable to use. Everything to help you get closer to wildlife, without disturbance – and with the perfect shot as a reward.
Key features of the Floating Hide Grebe II
- The tent canvas now extends all the way to the bottom of the tube, completely in reed camouflage.
- Fixed snoots at the front and back, integrated into the tent canvas.
- The front lens aperture and snoot are lower for an even better low angle.
- Reinforced frame with improved umbrella system.
- Better fit of the safety net for extra security.
- The viewing windows have been enlarged at the front and back. Above the snoot and to the left and right of it, you get a better view – without compromising camouflage or insect protection.
- All viewing windows close with a magnet and are easily held open with a loop. This saves time and is convenient in the field.
- Strategically placed handles are located on the sides to keep the bag balanced during transport – making it easier to carry, even if you have to walk a bit with your gear.
- The two accessory pockets with Velcro fasteners are still included, but in this version they are waterproof (except for the zipper). Dimensions: 20x13x13 cm. You can choose whether to mount them on the front or back, depending on your setup and preference.
- The included foot pump is also more robust, sturdier and built to last.
Assembly is simple: inflate both air chambers, place the mounting plate(s) and your tripod head, add the safety net and storage bags (if needed), assemble the tent with the umbrella system, and attach the canopy to the tube. Ready to go.
Please note : a comprehensive manual is included. Read it carefully before entering the water.
The PVC used is durable and wear-resistant – the same material used in inflatable rafts. The double air chambers provide maximum safety. The ends of the tube are tapered, with additional camouflage to blend seamlessly into the landscape. Each attachment point on the tube is double-reinforced.
The D-rings allow you to easily attach extra nets, bags, or accessories. The tent canvas is made of 150D polyester with a hydrostatic head of 2,500 mm – resistant to rain showers. Please note that the windows are not waterproof; rainwater can enter through these openings.
Overview of the viewing windows:
- Front: 1 window above the snoot (20x7 cm), 2 side windows (10x7 cm) and 1 larger window above (22x11 cm).
- Reverse: identical to the obverse.
- Left: 3 observation windows (22x11cm).
- Right: 3 observation windows (22x11cm).
All windows are fitted with an insect net and can be easily opened or closed with a string.
The camouflage allows you to get up close to birds and mammals without them recognizing you as a human. You blend in, often allowing you to capture spectacular photos of animals just a few meters away. The tent canvas features our signature reed print and offers additional attachment points for branches, reeds, or an additional camouflage net. With 20 sets of loops and cords, you can camouflage your hide to perfection.
Thanks to its compact size and lightweight design, the Floating Hide Grebe II is easy to take with you to local nature reserves, lakes, or ponds—or even on a plane trip. This allows you to work flexibly, wherever you are.
Prepare well:
Check your hide thoroughly before departure
- Safety first.
- Know how deep the water is.
- Determine your goals (which animals do you want to photograph?)
- Check if you are allowed to enter the area.
- Lighting conditions are essential:
Visit the location beforehand and plan your shoot well. This way, you'll be prepared to enter the water.
Water in? Here's how to do it:
Ideally, find a spot where you're not visible to people or animals. Set up your gear on the bank in a safe place. Enter the water through a reed bed or other vegetation – this way you'll be less visible as a human. Use the two handles to carry the hide, and once in the water, gently pull it along with the handle on the front or secure it with a rope.
Shooting from the Floating Hide Grebe II : the fixed snoots camouflage and protect your lens from splashes. Made of the same waterproof material as the tent canvas, they form a seamless integration with the tent. The insect screen windows provide excellent all-round visibility. You can shoot from an extremely low vantage point—especially at the rear, where your lens is literally at water level.
