With a hammer, anvil, and a coal fire, he started his forge on April 1 of that year. It quickly became clear to him that hammer and anvil weren't the future; they had to be automated. So he built a steam-forged hammer and named the company Stoomsmederij W. de Wit (Steam Forge W. de Wit). After the war, the coal fire was replaced by oil-fired furnaces, allowing production to continue. The second generation quickly realized that the region was too small and they acquired a second factory, De Wit Heros, a shovel and spade factory in Aduard. Combined with the hoe production in Kornhorn, they could supply nationwide. The steel was forged in Kornhorn and Aduard into semi-finished products for local blacksmiths in the Netherlands. The roughly forged tools were sent unfinished to the locals, who then shaped them into their own designs. The third generation expanded the range to include tools for construction and road building, and by then, deliveries were already being made to retailers through wholesalers. With the arrival of the fourth generation, automation was also continued. Nowadays, it's not all manual work; series of 10,000 pieces are produced using robots. Fire has been replaced by induction technology; welding, forging, and hardening can all be done by robot. DeWit was one of the first companies in the Netherlands to use 3D fiber laser technology, which allows the tool to be shaped after forging and hardening. In addition to 3D technology, the company also has two conventional fiber lasers. Sustainability is a priority at the company, which now produces garden tools and road construction equipment.
