Aileen Lee Wuornos (Charlize Theron) lives on the streets. She earns her living through street prostitution. She rents a garage as accommodation from Thomas (Bruce Dern), who more or less also looks after her. Lee was raped and humiliated several times at a young age and this affected her outlook on life. A life that does not exactly provide hope and in which Lee has a great distrust of men. Her life brightens up a bit when she meets the young teenage girl Selby (Christina Ricci) in a gay bar. A fragile bond of friendship develops between the two, which gradually becomes closer. Selby's family, she lives with an uncle and aunt, completely disapproves of her relationship with Lee. When Lee and Selby have agreed to go out for a night of bowling, Lee tries to score some money. She is taken by a man to a quiet place. There she is tied up and raped by him. She manages to break free, then Lee shoots the man dead. She hides the body and continues to use his car. Lee promises herself and the naive Selby a new future, with Selby leaving her family to live with Lee. The pressure to make money is increasing, but her hatred of men who use prostitutes is also growing. She soon shoots her next customer, and more follow.
