Patchouli has a deep, rich scent with notes of earth, wood, and a light sweetness. The scent is good for combating unwanted odors. This is why patchouli was very popular in the 1960s: it masked the smell of undesirable cigarettes. For the perfect fragrance combination, patchouli was combined with the freshness of cranberry. The spicy, warm, and earthy scent of patchouli is known for its calming properties and is often appreciated for promoting relaxation. The distinctive and spicy aroma of the patchouli plant has a rich history and is still widely used in perfumes. The fresh, sweet scent of cranberry immediately brings a vibrant energy to the air. The fruity aroma of cranberry is known for its invigorating effect and is therefore often used in perfumes and wellness products. The surprising blend of patchouli and cranberry takes you back to the time of hippies, travel, and happy freedom. This unique fragrance combination enchants the senses with a balanced mix of warmth and vitality. Patchouli has a sweet, spicy-earthy scent, perfect for combating unwanted odors. This is why patchouli was so popular in the 1960s (it masked the smell of a naughty cigarette). We've complemented patchouli with the fresh, tart notes of cranberry. The difference with regular household products lies in the type of chemicals. We use plant-based, natural biodegradable and safe chemicals as opposed to petrochemicals, synthetic chemicals. Every Marcel's Green Soap product is without parabens, acids, ammonia, chlorine and dye. Ingredients that can be harmful to the environment, your home or your body. Do you use animal testing during the production process? No. We absolutely do not use animals to test our products. We also know that our suppliers do not use animal testing. Furthermore, the products are safe to use around animals. Do you use palm and coconut components? Yes. We use both palm and coconut components. Our palm and coconut oil suppliers are all Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certified sustainable palm oil suppliers. This allows us to support the growing number of sustainable palm and coconut oil products. RSPO is the only organization actively working on sustainable palm oil products. Parties such as the WWF, Greenpeace, and Oxfam Novib are also members of this organization. But isn't palm oil what all those rainforests are cut down for? Unfortunately, a lot of palm oil still comes from plantations where rainforest once stood. And the soil is also being depleted, leading to erosion and soil degradation. The RSPO is trying to combat all this. They issue certificates to palm oil plantations that produce palm oil sustainably. Of course, this doesn't always work well, especially in countries where corruption is widespread. However, Marcel believes the solution lies in better monitoring and regulating these records. Properly cultivated palm oil is currently the best way for nature to meet its demand for this type of oil. But wouldn't it be much better if no palm oil were used at all? Approximately 40 billion liters of palm oil are produced worldwide, about 5 liters per person. Palm oil is the most effective way to produce oil. But Marcel's Green Soap also believes we should actively continue to explore alternatives to palm oil because we need the rainforests far too much! Are Marcel's Green Soap products biodegradable? All Marcel's Green Soap products are 99% biodegradable. By biodegradable, we mean that the entire product breaks down into CO2 and water within 28 days. Marcel's Green Soap products also contain salts, among other things. These are used for pH adjustment, to dissolve dirt, and to thicken the product. Salts never break down into water and CO2, hence the 99%. What about the packaging? All Marcel's Green Soap packaging is made from 100% recycled plastic, also known as HDPE. This makes Marcel's Green Soap the first brand in the Netherlands to only use recycled plastic in its packaging, thus contributing nothing to plastic pollution. Moreover, Marcel's Green Soap bottles are easily recyclable, so virtually no new plastic is needed. This is a common plastic and therefore also easy to recycle. Because no dye has been added to the bottle, the bottles are also particularly suitable for recycling. Why no plant plastics? Nowadays, you can also make bottles from plants, such as sugar cane or sugar beet. The disadvantage of sugar cane is that it has to be sourced from the other side of the world, which seems environmentally friendly, but the CO2 footprint is not so favorable. And once the bottle is finished, it's thrown away, creating yet another plastic waste problem. That's why Marcel focuses primarily on the use of recycled plastic. What's the path to more sustainable packaging? Marcel wants everyone to use only recycled plastic, preferably the entire bottle. Every week, around 4 million cleaning product bottles are thrown away in the Netherlands. Marcel works closely with organizations in the Netherlands and abroad to use plastic that has already been used as bottles by consumers. And not 10 or 15%, like many brands, but preferably 100%. This way, you ensure that no new raw materials need to be used. What should I do when the bottle is empty? A very kind but also urgent request: collect plastic separately. Marcel started this himself a few years ago and now realizes that half of his waste is plastic! The bottles are made of 100 HDPE (the label is also included), making them very recyclable. The bottle is then cut into small pieces, the plastic is washed, and then it can be reused for another new bottle. Where is Marcel's Green Soap produced? All products are produced at a soap factory in Utrecht. This used to be part of a large company, but these large companies often operate across Europe from one or two factories. This saves a lot of money, but it's not always good for the environment because trucks crisscross Europe. For example, a bottle of Marcel's Green Soap dish soap has traveled about 80 kilometers before it reaches your kitchen counter. With competitors, that's often 600 kilometers! What about Marcel's Green Soap's carbon footprint? If you want to properly assess a company's CO2 footprint, you have to look closely from start to finish—it's called craddle to grave. Because everything is produced in the Netherlands, and almost all raw materials come from the Netherlands (or Germany), the production process has minimal impact on the environment. Regarding marketing, sales, and administration, Marcel manages the company himself from his home office. No management teams, no international meetings, no commuting. This makes Marcel's Green Soap CO2 neutral from the start, as there are almost no additional emissions. Marcel considers this a much better way than initially emitting a huge amount of CO2 and then offsetting it. And what about the products at the consumer level? Because Marcel's products are 99% biodegradable and the bottles don't contain dyes, the environmental impact is reduced and recycling is promoted. And because Marcel's products are concentrated and the scent is much more pronounced, you often end up using a little less. Hey, nobody's perfect, and Marcel doesn't pretend to do everything he can to minimize his environmental impact. But he does try to do his part in this way.
