It is based on Kyykkä, a centuries-old throwing game from Karelia. However, playing Mölkky does not require the physical strength of Kyykkä and is therefore suitable for everyone, regardless of age or physical condition. The wooden pegs are all approximately the same size, and are numbered 1 to 12. The pegs are initially placed upright in a compact formation, 3 to 4 meters away from the throwing place, with the pegs organized as follows: 1st row, 1/2; 2nd row, 3/10/4; 3rd row, 5/11/12/6; 4th row, 7/9/8. When knocking over a peg, the number on it counts as the number of points scored. When knocking over multiple pegs, the number of pegs knocked down counts as the number of points scored. A peg does not count if it is resting on the Mölkky or other numbered pegs (it must lie flat on the ground to count). After each throw, the pegs are returned to their original position.
