It normally takes about 3 months before the worms have composted the first container. Certainly in the beginning it is important that you do not give too much green waste at the same time. It is better to add smaller quantities regularly (twice a week), preferably cut small. The maximum amount per container is approximately 10 cm. If you have the impression that the worms do not eat at all, stop giving food for a week. Worms have no teeth, so the food must first become soft. The smaller the food is made, the faster bacteria, traces and micro-organisms make food suitable for the worms. Start adding green waste again when you see that the top layer is composting. Too much nutrition can cause all kinds of problems, such as odors. Shakes the relevant container and scoop food, so that oxygen can be better off and the worms can compost faster. Just like people, worms want some variation in their food. So give different types food. If you notice that they do not eat certain substances, no longer add it for the time being. Worms can digest great grass and leaves, but it increases the temperature in the worm tower and the compost is not that rich. Fruit peels are much better. If the acidity (pH value) is lower than 6, it is not good for the worms. Ideal is a pH value of 7. The value of 8 is the upper limit. Therefore, prevent you from adding too much acid in the form of lemon, oranges, grapefruit or onions. If necessary, sprinkle a small handful of lime on the waste or add carbon -rich material such as cardboard, newspaper or egg boxes to lower the acidity. Make sure that the diet is always moist like a squeezed sponge (not wet). The average humidity of green waste is 80%, so moisture is normal. If there is too much moisture in the worm tower, it can smell. Open the tap, add dry material in the upper tank (coconut fiber, newspaper strings, kitchen rolls, tissues, etc.) The moisture is excellent food if you dilute ten -time with water. Due to too moist material, the holes of the bins can be closed, which hinders the oxygen entry and thus the entire process can be delayed. Shake things up and scoop it up. If the system is too dry, add the compost tea in the upper tank or add some damp newspaper strings.
