Every handyman starts with the right tools
Whether you're an experienced handyman or just tackling your first job — you won't get anywhere without the right tools. The basic equipment of every handyman does not have to be large, but it must contain the right pieces. In this overview we discuss the tools that you really need, from hand tools to power tools and storage systems.
Hand tools: the basics that should always be in your suitcase
Hand tools are the backbone of any job. No power required, always ready to use, and often faster than looking for a socket. These are the essentials:
The indispensable basis
- Phillips screwdriver and flat screwdriver: The two most commonly used sizes (PH2 and 1.0 mm flat) cover 90% of all screwing work.
- Combi runner (adjustable wrench): Replaces an entire set of ring spanners and always fits properly.
- Cutting pliers and water pump pliers: For gripping, bending and cutting wire and small parts.
- Measuring tape (5 meters): Measure twice, cut once. A stiff, wide measuring tape with hook is essential.
- Nail hammer (300g): Light enough for precise work, heavy enough for sturdy nails.
- Spirit level (60 cm): Straight, level and 45 degrees — the basis for any hanging work.
Helpful Tip: a hand tool set often contains all these basics in a handy storage case, cheaper than buying everything separately.
Power tools: faster, easier, more professional
For larger jobs, power tools save you hours of work. You don't have to have everything, but these three are essential:
1. Cordless drill — the all-rounder
The cordless drill is the most used tool in every household. Drill into wood, metal or stone, and drive screws in and out. Choose an 18V model with two batteries and you can work for hours without a socket.
2. Circular saw — straight and fast cutting
A circular saw is indispensable for sawing MDF, plywood or plasterboard. Faster and straighter than with a handsaw. Set the cutting depth to the thickness of the material plus 2 mm for the best results.
3. Random orbital sander — smooth finish
Sanding is the least popular job, but with an eccentric sander it is quick and dust-free. Use coarse sandpaper (P80) for removing material and fine (P120-P240) for finishing.

Building hardware: small parts, big difference
It's the effort of the job that is underestimated: it building hardware. Hinges, corner joints, door handles, striker plates and head screws are the invisible heroes of every construction. Invest in stainless steel (SS) for outdoor work — it will prevent rust spots after the first winter.
Practical tips for construction fittings
- Pre-drilling is the rule: Always drill a pilot hole in wood to prevent splitting, especially at the ends of a plank.
- The right screw for the right material: Use drywall screws for drywall, countersunk head for wood, and tongue-groove screws for decking.
- Hinge formula: For a standard interior door you need at least three hinges. Calculate the hinge distance from the top at 20 cm and from the bottom at 30 cm.
Toolbox: storage and organization
A good one toolbox not only saves space, but also time. Those who can find their tools complete jobs faster. There are three main types:
| Type | Advantage | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminum case | Sturdy, clear, pull-out drawers | Fixed workplace / workshop |
| Trolley cupboard | Mobile, many drawers, modular | Handymen who work on location |
| Bag with pockets | Light, flexible, portable | Small jobs and maintenance |
Pro tip: label your drawers with their contents. You save minutes of searching per job, and that adds up quickly.
Locks and bolts: security for your home and shed
In addition to tools, safety is also part of handyman equipment. Locks and bolts protect not only your front door, but also your shed, cellar and tool storage. Cylinder locks with the SKG quality mark are the minimum standard for exterior doors. Interior doors require a sturdy cupboard lock or latch.
