Cajóns are versatile percussion instruments in the form of a wooden sound box on which the musician sits and plays with his hands. Originally from Peru, today cajóns are widely used in acoustic music, flamenco, pop, world music and numerous other musical styles. Striking different parts of the playing surface can produce both deep bass tones and sharp strikes, allowing one instrument to offer a wide range of rhythmic possibilities. Many cajóns are equipped with internal strings or snare effects that provide extra timbre and dynamics. Thanks to their compact size, natural sound and versatility, cajóns are popular with both novice and experienced percussionists and are an excellent alternative to a traditional drum kit in acoustic settings.
