Using a close-up filter allows you to photograph closer than the minimum distance your lens normally allows. You screw the close-up filter onto the front of your lens. Close-up filters come in different strengths: +1, +2, +3, and +4. The range of close-up filters varies depending on the lens and the combination of the close-up filters.

The formula is:
X : ( D * X + 1)
- X is the minimum focal length of your lens in meters
- D is the diopter number (strength) on the close-up lens
Calculation example:
You have a lens that can focus from 55 centimeters and you're using a close-up filter with a strength of +3. In this case, the calculation is:
0.55 : ( 3 * 0.55 + 1 ) and this is the same as
0.55 : ( 1.65 + 1 ) or
0.55 : 2.65 = 0.21 meters, so 21 centimeters
