Tamarinds

Tamarinds

Tamarinds are legumes that grow on the tamarind tree and have a hard, brown skin with a sticky, dark brown pulp on the inside. The taste is strongly sweet and sour and slightly caramel-like, sometimes with a spicy undertone.

They are widely used in cooking as a seasoning in sauces, chutneys, drinks, sweets and savory dishes, especially in Asian, African and Latin American cuisines. Tamarind can be used fresh or as a paste or concentrate and is known for its distinct, complex flavor.
