Food forests are receiving a lot of attention because they contribute to sustainable food production. They have a high biodiversity and enrich the soil; they are completely self-sufficient and climate-resilient. Pioneers in the field of food forests have already demonstrated that their plots yield more healthy yields at lower costs. This makes food forests a fully-fledged alternative to conventional agriculture. This book is the ideal source of knowledge and inspiration for anyone who wants to create a professional food forest. This book is of interest to owners and/or managers of nature reserves or woodlands, private landowners or estate owners, forest and nature managers, government officials, farmers, gardeners, and permaculturists. "Anyone who wants to get started in their own green space will find this book to be a wonderful source of inspiration." - Taco Blom, Permaculture School Netherlands The book contains a wealth of background information and offers valuable tips on ecology and landscape, wildlife, management, yield, and much more. Extensive background information Designing, planning, and planting a food forest Useful lists and tips 18 example projects including floor plans and plant lists Includes a separate plant guide with 250 edible varieties Beautifully illustrated From the press "Very inspiring and diverse!" - eigenwijsblij Madelon Oostwoud is a designer and garden author. She has been growing vegetables, fruit, and herbs in the postage-stamp garden behind her house for years. She has a food forest in North Holland, gives lectures and workshops, and writes for garden magazines. Madelon previously wrote the bestseller "A Small Edible Garden with Perennials" >>, which was nominated for the Jan Wolkers Book Prize 2016. Food forests are sustainable plantings where, through a targeted, highly diverse selection of plants and optimal use of the forest's distinct layer structure, edible plants can be harvested continuously. The principle, construction, and management of this form of sustainable food production are explained in detail in this book, including descriptions of several completed projects. Furthermore, many practical tips and information are included. The appendix contains (web) addresses, plant lists, and a glossary/index. A plant guide with over 250 edible plants is included as a separate booklet. The enthusiastically written book is illustrated in color with photos and drawings (including maps!). Readers interested in this form of agriculture, whether professionally or purely for fun, will certainly be inspired by this book. The book includes descriptions of several completed projects. Yet you can turn a small garden into a paradise! Think of English cottage gardens. They are rarely large but are full of flowers, herbs, and fruit. There was almost no information or manual available about creating gardens with edible perennials. That was the main reason for me to create the book, and my publisher was immediately enthusiastic about the idea. Manual Small gardens and balconies in the city, surrounded by high walls, small gardens in new neighborhoods—there are simply many more small gardens than large gardens. My book is a manual for successfully creating a small garden, using edible perennials. It is, as the title says: A small edible garden with perennials. Designs for garden, balcony, and terrace by 6 to 66 square meters. Double the fun. Edible perennials offer double the pleasure: they're often beautiful to look at, and you can pick and eat them from your own garden. And all without too much work. Easy gardening, with a cup of coffee and a newspaper. Edible plants. I started the book with a list of all edible perennials that can grow successfully in the Netherlands. I thought there would be about 125 species. It ended up being over 200 perennials. I've classified them into Berries, Flowers, Fruits, Vegetables, Herbs, Onions, Wild Plants, and Mushrooms. Everything edible and suitable for growing in a small garden. I also list the growth habit, preferred soil type, the edible part, and its usefulness in the kitchen. Such a list has never been compiled before, not even abroad. The list is an appendix to the book and partly determines its great success. A small edible garden book. Designs and inspiration. The unique thing about my book is that there has never been a book with attractive designs and inspiration for small gardens. with perennial edible plants! Not even abroad, unless it's the book Edible Perennial Gardening by Anni Kelsey. But it doesn't include sample designs and plants that aren't available in the Netherlands or won't grow successfully. Small gardens, big possibilities. Existing gardening books almost always focus on large gardens. Books about small gardens are usually full of suggestions for paving, lounge sofas, and garden lighting. This is also how landscaping companies often present themselves: all hard materials that have nothing to do with gardening. And yet, you can actually turn small gardens into paradises where you can grow all sorts of delicious things, precisely because the conditions are sheltered! Shady conditions. During the year I worked on the book, I increasingly discovered that perennial edible plants are often not very picky about soil type. And what also makes the book so great: Perennial edible plants often tolerate more shady conditions very well! Not the Mediterranean herbs and the fig, of course, which prefer plenty of sun and don't mind a little drought. That makes them suitable for a roof terrace. But a garden among the The neighbors' fences have their limitations. In the book, you'll read how these limitations work out well for edible plants. Vegetable Gardening and Foraging Interest in edible plants is enormous. This is evident from the enormous interest in vegetable gardens and foraging. Excellent books have recently been published on both subjects. A vegetable garden requires full sun. Gardens in the city and in new housing developments are rarely in full sun. Due to shade from neighboring houses, the garden usually only receives sun for part of the day. Vegetable gardens also require a lot of time and patience, as well as knowledge of growing annuals from seed. Not everyone appreciates this. A small edible garden was called a perfect book between ornamental garden and vegetable garden in a review. I like that. It makes foraging from your own land possible. Green makes you healthy and happy The importance of greenery in our immediate environment is enormous. I recently read somewhere that gardeners are happy people because they make their own surroundings beautiful. Green is practically synonymous with healthy these days, and that's a very positive thing. With With my book in hand, you can harvest delicious food from even the smallest outdoor space—how wonderful is that! I hope my readers and users will enjoy my book. Sincerely, Madelon Oostwoud
