De smaak varieert afhankelijk van de bloemen waar de nectar vandaan komt, maar is meestal zoet, aromatisch en soms licht bloemig of kruidig. Honing wordt gebruikt als zoetmiddel in thee, desserts, bakproducten en marinades.
Het is populair omdat het een natuurlijke zoetstof is met een rijke smaak en daarnaast ook een lange houdbaarheid heeft.
