The standard sets requirements for factories regarding the use of harmful chemicals, for example. In addition, factories are obliged to use a sustainable wastewater system and to be economical with water and energy. GOTS also includes criteria regarding working conditions, which are based on the standards of the International Labour Organization, such as the right to freedom of association and the right to safe and healthy working conditions. The GOTS standard is applied throughout the chain in the processing of organic fibers. Certain recognized standards and certificates for organic farming are permitted by GOTS; subsequently, certification based on GOTS begins at the first step in processing.
