Het strooisel wordt gevormd door de fermentatie van stromeel en appelpulp door Effectieve Micro-organismen. Bokashi is het voorverteerd voedsel voor het bodemleven. In de bodem zorgt het voor efficiëntere omzetting van organisch materiaal en verhoogt het de biodiversiteit. Daarnaast vormt het een ideale voedingsbron voor micro-organismen die erop aanwezig zijn. Bokashi strooisel bevat veel stofwisselingsproducten (natuurlijke antibiotica, groeihormonen, organische zuren…), verkregen door de fermentatie, die de plantengroei positief beïnvloeden.
