Product specifications Growing oyster mushrooms on coffee grounds Item description Growing oyster mushrooms on coffee grounds Item number 8717953186355 Occasion Birthday, Sinterklaas, Christmas Hobby Baking & Cooking Suitable for age F - 13-17 Years, G - Adults Country of origin Netherlands Getting started with your grow kit We're going to help you harvest delicious mushrooms yourself. To get started, clean the grow kit. Do this with water that is hotter than 70 degrees Celsius. It can also be boiling. This ensures that any harmful molds disappear. Also thoroughly clean the container in which you collect the coffee grounds. Unwanted molds can collect in a dirty collection container, and you don't want that! Crumble the spawn Now fill the grow kit with a layer of coffee grounds. Enough to cover the bottom. Mix this with the spawn. Make sure the coffee grounds are moist enough. They should be the color of dark chocolate. You can add some water if they are too dry. Then put the lid on the grow kit and wait! After about 5 days, you'll see that all the coffee grounds at the bottom have turned white. That's the time to add more coffee. Every time your coffee grounds turn nice and white, you can add more coffee grounds; you'll see that this happens faster and faster. Growing tip 2 – Your first layer of coffee grounds has turned completely white. Handling your coffee grounds: Don't store your coffee grounds for too long. You want to use them as fresh as possible so that harmful mold can't grow on them. Daily fresh is best. If you do want to store your coffee grounds before adding them to the grow kit, you can store them in a sealed container in the refrigerator. Make sure the container is clean, and don't store them for more than three days. Don't store your coffee grounds for more than three days. And if you do store them, store them in a clean, sealed container in the refrigerator. Just-coffee-grounds-added-jpg The mold spreads slowly through your coffee grounds. Because your mushroom needs air to breathe, you can't add too much coffee grounds at once, but a layer of about one centimeter at a time. The mushroom will spread through the new layer of coffee grounds. When it turns white, add another layer. Continue this until the grow kit is completely full. Going on vacation? Then you can add a three-centimeter layer for that one time and put the grow kit in the refrigerator. During your vacation, the oyster mushroom fungus will continue to grow quietly, and when you get home, you can take it out of the refrigerator again. Growing tip 3 – Problems, what now? Yes, you're doing great! You add coffee grounds every few days and see them turn white. You immediately put the lid back on the grow kit and check occasionally to make sure everything is still going well. You can continue this until your grow kit is full. Just-added-coffee-grounds-jpg Filter coffee, espresso, or Senseo? Did you know you can also add coffee filters? Because boiling water has been poured through it and it's made of wood fiber (paper), oyster mushroom mold can grow perfectly on it. You can cut or tear the filter (with clean scissors or fingers) before putting it in the grow kit to make it easier for the mold to spread. The same applies to Senseo pods: tear them open and then add them. Not enough coffee? Bring coffee grounds from work or ask friends. They'll probably be happy to get rid of them, and your oyster mushroom mold will grow nicely. Of course, use a clean container to transport it. growkit-met-trichoderma Green mold, what now?! If you're unlucky, you'll suddenly see a few green dots among your beautiful white oyster mushroom mold. This could be because you're not working hygienically, your coffee grounds are too old, or they're not moist enough. The mold you see is called Trichoderma. If you see green dots, carefully scoop them out with a spoon that you've first dipped in boiling water. This way, you can be sure you're not adding any new dirt to your coffee grounds. Aren't your coffee grounds the color of dark chocolate? That could be the cause of your green mold, and you can moisten the coffee grounds you add afterward with a plant sprayer. Is your bucket turning completely green? Then you're out of luck and have to start over. We, too, throw away a bag of substrate that turns completely green more often than we'd like. Growing tip 4 – keep going. Everything's going well. You add coffee grounds every few days and see them turn white. You immediately put the lid back on the grow kit and check occasionally to see if everything is still going well. If all goes well, your grow kit is now completely full up to the lid. From that point on, you don't need to open it again. It can take quite a while for your grow kit to produce mushrooms. Make sure your grow kit isn't too warm, as this will make the oyster mushroom think it's still summer. A cool, bright spot is best for your oyster mushroom. But what about that tape? Oyster mushrooms grow where there's light. With the grow kit, that's where the holes are. The tape is breathable and doesn't stick very well, so the oyster mushrooms can easily push it aside. On the left, you see mini mushrooms behind the tape. A few days later, the tape will be pushed off and the mushrooms will grow alongside it. Once they've passed, you can carefully pull the tape aside, but you don't have to. Almost ready to harvest! Your mushrooms will grow into full-fledged mushrooms within a week. Week tip 5 - Harvesting Finally, you can harvest your oyster mushrooms! growkit-vierkant whatsapp-image-2020-02-02-at-13.07.45 Your oyster mushrooms are ready to harvest when the caps are flat. In the photo on the left, the oyster mushroom caps are still nicely crooked. Then you can leave them on overnight. In the bottom photo, the caps are not quite completely flat yet, and that's the perfect time to harvest. How do you harvest? You harvest your oyster mushrooms by grabbing them close to the bucket and turning them. Then, turn them with the base of the substrate. A tiny bit of substrate usually comes along with the base, so you then cut that off with a sharp knife. And then your mushrooms are harvested and ready for the pan. Cover the holes with new tape or the original tape. Dried out mushrooms? Dried out mushrooms happen regularly, especially because our houses are quite dry in the winter. The great thing is that you can still use them. Soak them in water and then fry them, or they're delicious in risotto. Dried oyster mushrooms are even a delicacy available in most supermarkets. And now you've grown them yourself! Environmental information about growing oyster mushrooms on coffee grounds. It has a label made of unsorted waste paper. It was put together by BlueCity Rotterdam. It makes a very nice and sustainable gift. In 2030, more than 8 billion people will live on our planet. More than 65% of them live in cities on less than 3% of the world's surface. But these cities produce 50% of the waste and account for 80% of the toxic emissions. Meanwhile, we continue to import food from all over the world and burn the often highly valuable residual flows. As a result, we produce even more waste and emit even more toxic substances. How can we do it differently? Better and smarter. This is partly due to the use of a locally abundant resource: coffee grounds. Coffee is the most traded commodity in the world after oil. Nearly 10 billion kilos of coffee beans are produced annually. The Netherlands imports 150 million kilos of coffee beans annually for its own use. A surprisingly small percentage of this ends up in your cup of coffee: less than 1%. Of the remaining coffee grounds, we throw away over 120 million kilos, almost all of which ends up in the incinerator. Yet, we could also convert it into food. Sustainably produced oyster mushrooms, for example! What are the benefits? Producing and consuming oyster mushrooms grown on locally available coffee grounds offers numerous advantages, namely: Reducing the amount of waste that ends up in the incinerator, thus reducing CO2 emissions. Reducing transport kilometers by producing local food. All ingredients for this kit are locally sourced and supplied only to local parties. Increasing the supply of plant-based foods. Oyster mushrooms are an excellent meat substitute and also much more efficient in their use of water than meat. 1 kilo of beef requires 15,000 liters of water. 1 kilo of oyster mushrooms requires less than 5 liters.
