It usually takes about 3 months for the worms to compost the first bin. Especially in the beginning, it's important not to feed too much green waste at once. It's better to add smaller amounts regularly (twice a week), preferably chopped finely. The maximum amount per bin is about 10 cm. If you feel like the worms aren't eating at all, stop feeding them for a week. Worms don't have teeth, so the food must first be softened. The smaller the food is, the faster bacteria, spores, and microorganisms will make it suitable for the worms. Start adding green waste again when you see the top layer composting. Too much food can cause all kinds of problems, such as odors. Shake the bin and stir the food to improve oxygen circulation and speed up the composting process. Worms, like people, enjoy a variety of foods. So, provide a variety of foods. If you notice they're not eating certain things, stop adding them for now. Worms can easily digest grass and leaves, but they increase the temperature in the Worm Tower, and the compost isn't as rich. Fruit peels are much better. A pH below 6 is not good for the worms. A pH of 7 is ideal. 8 is the upper limit. Therefore, avoid adding excessive acidity, such as lemons, oranges, grapefruit, or onions. If necessary, sprinkle a small handful of lime over the waste monthly or add carbon-rich materials such as cardboard, newspaper, or egg cartons to lower the acidity. Ensure the food is always moist like a wrung-out sponge (not wet). The average moisture content of green waste is 80%, so moisture is normal. If there's too much moisture in the Worm Tower, it may start to smell. Turn on the tap and add dry material to the top tray (coconut fiber, newspaper, paper towels, tissues, etc.). This moisture is excellent nutrition if diluted tenfold with water. Excessively moist material can clog the perforated bottoms of the trays, preventing oxygen from entering and slowing down the entire process. Shake the mixture and stir it around. If the system is too dry, add the compost tea back to the top tray or add some moistened newspaper.
