More and more packers and transporters are looking for ways to reduce their ecological footprint. Until recently, this was a difficult undertaking when it came to stretch films for pallet stabilization. After all, it was essential to always be able to guarantee that the quality of pallet development would remain (literally) unaffected. After many kilometers of testing, we believe we can now supply a bio-based stretch film that rivals the very best in strength. This stretch film is so good and stable in quality. Compared to standard stretch films, a material reduction of up to 50% can also be achieved! This offers a double environmental benefit without any additional costs. So, what's so sustainable about bio-based film? Bio-based stretch film is made of at least 50% granulate (green PE) extracted from biomass, in this case sugarcane. Naturally, this film is also 100% recyclable. Circular, renewable, and naturally derived are the terms used to describe this film. The major benefit here is the reduction in the use of fossil fuels. The sugarcane plantations also provide additional CO2 absorption. So you're being environmentally conscious! Unfortunately, bio-based doesn't mean it disappears naturally when it ends up in nature. While it does break down faster than regular film, you should dispose of this stretch film in the normal plastic waste stream. This film is not compostable, biodegradable, or biodegradable. Therefore, it cannot be disposed of in the organic waste bin. This is also why this film is transparent white. Is bio-based stretch film more expensive than standard film? No, to guarantee the best quality, we use the high-quality Coex-Blown film technology (multi-layer, blown film). This technology is more complex and therefore more expensive than the standard cast film technology (drawn film), resulting in a higher roll price. However, due to this high quality, the stretchability and tear resistance are much higher than with standard film. For comparison: with 5 wraps around a pallet with standard 20my film, you use approximately 168 grams of film, while with Fixstretch-biobased 12my, you use only 68 grams. This is because the film can be stretched much further and is naturally thinner. The pallet stability is at least as good. This represents a material reduction of over 50%. Ultimately, this also reduces the cost per pallet development. This also has environmental benefits: because you use less film, you also produce less waste! In addition, the so-called stretch memory is better than standard film, so that the film always remains taut around the pallet when the pallet load moves during transport. 'Biobased' refers to materials made from renewable raw materials such as starch, sugar, cellulose, lactic acid, proteins, or microorganisms. Currently, these are usually derived from corn, beet, sugar cane, wood, potatoes, tapioca root, or castor nuts, but in the future, they will primarily be derived from residual materials and waste streams. The term 'renewable' generally refers to a term within 10 years. Biobased plastics can be compostable or recyclable, but not always. Biobased packaging materials include materials such as paper, cardboard, and wood, as well as the much newer biobased plastics. We will focus on the latter group, as this is where most developments and innovations are taking place.
