The standard, for example, sets requirements for factories regarding the use of harmful chemicals. In addition, factories are obliged to use a sustainable wastewater system and to use water and energy economically. GOTS also includes criteria regarding working conditions, which are based on the standards of the International Labour Organization, such as the right to freedom of association and the right to safe and healthy working conditions. The GOTS standard is applied throughout the entire chain in the processing of organic fibers. Certain recognized standards and certificates for organic farming are authorized by GOTS; GOTS certification then begins at the first step in processing. GOTS is managed by the International Working Group (IWG), which consists of four organizations: the International Association Natural Textile Industry (IVN) in Germany, the Soil Association (SA) in England, the Organic Trade Association (OTA) in the United States, and the Japan Organic Cotton Association (JOCA). An inspection body verifies compliance with the requirements. Control Union, for example, conducts inspections, and other organizations are authorized to perform these inspections after receiving approval from the IWG.
