Blijham stems can be recognized by the thickened bottom of the stem. The thickened bottom makes the handle extra strong and ensures that it fits firmly in the hand. Ash wood is tough, shock-absorbing and strong. The ash wood undergoes two drying processes: during the first drying process, sawn ash wood planks are air dried. During the second process, the ash wood is dried in a computer-controlled climate chamber. Due to the drying process, the handle does not shrink, tools remain firmly attached to the handle and the pierced hilt can be pressed to the handle without glue or staples. The ATLAS stem is then waxed with the vegetable Carnauba. This ensures that the wood can breathe, does not absorb water or dirt and retains the beautiful white color. Waxing ensures a longer lifespan and a pleasantly smooth stem, which prevents blisters. In addition, vegetable waxing of stems is better for the environment than using varnish or paraffin.
