One of the most recognisable trains in the country, Pendolino trains first came to the UK in 2001 when Virgin Trains purchased 53 Class 390 Pendolinos. Pendolinos were developed in Italy during the 1960s, the name derives from the Italian word pendolo, meaning ‘small pendulum’, because of the way the train tilts as it takes curves on the track. The Pendolino train’s tilt mechanism means it can travel at higher speeds on older tracks whilst maintaining passenger comfort. A Pendolino’s top speed is 140mph (225kph), however, in the UK it is restricted to 125mph (200kph).
