In the sea, the sponge acts as a filter. It pumps water through itself, and in doing so, a sponge obtains nutrition (such as plankton). Depending on the temperature, depth, and currents, a sponge needs half a year to five years to grow. A synthetic sponge has closed air bubbles, while in a natural sponge all channels have an outlet, allowing dirt to be easily removed.
